“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” – Albert Einstein
I love this quote because it’s so true. It’s crazy to think that by doing the same things you have always done, you will eventually get different results. So many people want things (money, success, power, etc) in life, but never really do anything to get them. It’s almost as if they think that one day those things will just be handed over to them, or they’ll finally catch a break. That truly is the definition of insanity.
I’ve found that, typically, people continue to do what doesn’t work because of at least one of these two reasons:
1. They don’t realize what they are doing isn’t working.
2. They don’t know what else to do.
Those that fall under the first reason are people that actually take action, but their actions are ineffective. These people fail to see that what they are doing isn’t working and they’re too stubborn to change it. Because to them, changing what they are doing is like giving up or quitting. I’m not saying you should change what you’re doing just because you aren’t seeing immediate results, but at some point you must be able to look at your situation objectively and decide whether or not there is a better way.
Reason number two, or those that don’t know what else to do is where most people seem to fall under. I’ve seen so many people go on in life without taking any kind of action because they “don’t know what to do.” Whenever I hear someone say that, I feel like they’re lying to themselves. I know that deep down inside they know there are things they can do that will at least help them get a little closer to their goal.
For example, people that want financial success might not know the exact steps to take, but there are things they can do instead of what they’re currently doing that can help. Like instead of watching TV, they can read a book on investing. Instead of going to parties they can go to financial seminars. Instead of keeping up with “friends” on Facebook they can read the business section in the paper. I can go on and on, but you get the point. Just by changing some of their habits, the knowledge they accumulate will at least give them an idea on what they should do and will help them take the first step towards achieving financial success.
The truth is if you don’t already have what you want in life, you’re probably never going to get it unless you change some of your habits. An exercise I like to do is this: Think about what you have done over the last month, and stretch it over the course of the next five years. What does your life look like? Where will you be? What will you have accomplished? If your answer isn’t exactly what you’d wish it to be, either you’re insane or its time to change some of your habits =).
